Grand Cru Quality from Les Perrières 1er Cru

If there is one premier cru vineyard in Burgundy that merits elevation to grand cru status, it must be Les Perrières in Meursault,” raves Robert Parker. Clive Coates MW concurs, saying “most would agree (it) produces Meursault’s best wine.” The 2013 Domaine Pierre Matrot Meursault Perrières Premier Cru is the kind of wine we spend years chasing — a “textbook Perrières” according to Burghound’s Allen Meadows, who granted the bottle “Sweet spot outstanding!” status before lobbing on 93 points. Vinous went a notch higher with a 93+ score, calling the marvelously vibrant honeysuckle effort, “stylish, elegant,” with “superb cut and penetration.” This spectacular Matrot release goes for $105 a bottle on the market — Thanks to an importer switch, the previous importer wanted to clear out the warehouse at landed cost and the first call was to Wine Access; they wouldn’t have to make another. In one of the most electrifying deals in recent history, we’re offering it to our clients at 52% off — just $49.99. We call that the “wow” factor.

Vintages of this cuvée from Matrot, one of the oldest estate bottlers in Burgundy, are sold at New York’s Eleven Madison Park and France’s best restaurants. The Perrières vineyard is the stuff of dreams for White Burgundy, home of multiple 97-99 point wines, and the glorious golden opulence of this Matrot starts there.

Gregarious winemaker Thierry Matrot’s 1.2-acre parcel is located in the southwest corner of the commune. Vines an average of 56 years old are rooted up to 1,100 feet above sea level, with perfect easterly orientation for abundant sunlight. The soil is poor and thin, mainly white limestone, endowing the pristine Chardonnay grapes with the steely acidity and exceptional calcareous minerality that are synonymous with Perrières. Famous for his unsparing honesty, Matrot has said he loves the 2013 whites. For White Burgundy enthusiasts, it simply doesn’t get any better than this.
