Introducing Argentina’s Best Kept Secret — Bonarda

No Argentinian winemaker is better suited to championing the delicious Bonarda grape — one of Argentina’s best kept secrets — than Matias Michelini. He embraces the exuberant nature of the variety — a Led Zeppelin soundtrack accompanies natural-yeast fermentations, where the addition of sulphur is a sin. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Because Michelini uses carbonic maceration — the same method used to make Beaujolais — the Bonarda Pura reveals bright, fresh-perfumed and lifted aromas and a lightness on the palate.

British Master of Wine Jancis Robinson has written that Bonarda “makes particularly exuberant, fruity wines for relatively early consumption.” No bottle better captures this sentiment, and Michelini’s deft and wild touch, than this 2016 Via Revolucionaria Bonarda Pura.

It takes but one look at Via Revolucionaria’s winery in the Uco Valley to realize you’re dealing with something different. The circular winery nestled at the base of the Andes and the biodynamically farmed vines planted in circles testify to Michelini’s distinct point of view. “There are no straight lines in the natural world,” he told us.

Pop a cork. Put Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” on repeat, and revel in Matias’ rollicking take on the Bonarda grape, deep in color, chameleon-like, suggesting a heady and highly extracted red, but on the palate is fresh, fruity, and savory, bright and brooding.
