2005 Chateau Margaux Margaux

Château Margaux produced one of their greatest ever wines in 2005, and we now have the rare privilege of offering some of this 100-point masterpiece perfectly cellared, and available with perfect provenance.

Sourcing impeccable examples of this perfect wine can be difficult—enough time has passed that many bottles have been auctioned, changed hands, and then gone through the wash again—which is why today’s offer feels like such a coup.

We’ve finally secured a small number of them, and they’re sitting in the dark, cold cellars of Château Margaux, awaiting shipment in the fall—and they’re as special as we hoped they’d be. 2005 was one of the great triumphs of Paul Pontallier, Margaux’s late, legendary winemaker, and Margaux has stood out in numerous “15 years later” retrospectives. In a tasting last year, Vinous called it “off the charts and easily one of the wines of the vintage,” awarding it a 99-point score.

Robert Parker called 2005 “one of the most singular years of the past five decades” for its outrageous concentration, power, and structure. Margaux’s 2005 is a monument of a bottling—one that will be as long-lived as it is great, with the sumptuous fruit and beguiling aromatics that are trademarks of the estate. It’s showing well now, but still has enough stuffing and structure to continue its slow development in the cellar for two decades and beyond. 

Few estates on the planet inspire reverence like Margaux. It was the only Classified Growth to earn a perfect score in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, and this First Growth has never stopped pursuing perfection since.
