A BIG BOTTLE Cabernet Classic … from the Base of Spring Mountain Road

The Wine Spectator cover story put the finishing touches on one of the most magical and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon vintages in Napa Valley history. First it was Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate that told readers to “do whatever they can to source the best 2010s, as they are magnificent.” Then Wine Spectator piled on, calling the class of 2010 “classic.”

Napa’s 2010 “First Growths” — Screaming Eagle, Bond, Harlan Estate, Schrader, and Colgin — garnered 97-100 points from Parker. The “Super Seconds” — Scarecrow, PlumpJack, Juslyn, and Hundred Acre — would finish just a few points behind at 93-96 points.

At Juslyn, winemaker Craig MacLean crafted a masterpiece. Parker raved about the 2010 Juslyn all three times he reviewed a wine he said “vividly captures the essence of the year.” Drawn off a back-breaking 30-degree slope at the base of Spring Mountain Road, proprietor Perry Butler delayed the call to harvest until early October before harvesting a tiny crop of small-berry clusters. Sugars soared at the tail end of the growing season yet acids remained intact. Seeds browned effortlessly, explaining the sumptuous structure of MacLean’s magnificent 2010.

Deep purple to the rim, with explosive, chiseled aromas of mountain blueberry, sweet spice, and violets. Rich, dense, and compact on the attack, infused with chewy, small-berry texture, packed with blackberry and currant, drizzled with crème de cassis, all bracketed by textbook dusty tannins. Drink now, if you must. Tasted out of 750ml bottles, Parker predicted that the 2010 Juslyn will age gracefully until the early 2030s.
