Right out of the gate, the Dakota Shy winery is already causing critics to trip over themselves in adulation. “Dakota Shy is one of the most exciting young projects I have tasted in some time,” gushes Antonio Galloni, founder of Vinous. Wine Spectator ranks Dakota Shy among the “rising stars in California Cabernet,” with its 94-point 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet landing on the Top 100 of 2016. Dakota Shy founders Todd Newman and Tom Garrett met at Revana Family Vineyards, both learning from legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett (Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Paradigm). Newman would become Revana’s national sales director; Garrett’s resume would include stops at Turley, Phelps, Mondavi, and his family-owned Detert Vineyard.

Come 2008, in a wine-country twist of fate, Todd would be able to partner with the man who had hired him at Revana — Tom Garrett — to make the wines for Dakota Shy.
