Michel Rolland Protege’s Win-Win No. 1

Langner got his start at the Rothschild family’s Château Clarke in Bordeaux. He founded Hesperian, a boutique Napa winery and has impressed Robert Parker with his wines “that can evolve for two decades or more.” But last October’s fires hit Langner hard, his home and office atop Atlas Peak reduced to ashes. To recoup costs and begin rebuilding his home, Philippe has offered us a special price on this 2012 Anatomy No. 1 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as part of a warehouse clearance. Cellared perfectly, out of reach of the flames, the outstanding 2012 is just beginning to show lovely, bottle-aged complexity. 

Writing in Decanter, Alex Hunt MW called the 2012 Anatomy No. 1 “well-defined” with “punchy cassis aromas,” “Focused and structured on the palate,” “with plenty of life ahead.” Sourced from pristine vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Atlas Peak, Rutherford, and Coombsville, the 2012 “No. 1” is supple yet deep, demonstrating the deft touch Langner learned in Bordeaux, from one of the world’s masters.

At Rothschild-held Château Clarke in the Médoc, Langner worked alongside Michel Rolland, the man responsible for some of the world’s highest-scoring and notoriously rare clarets and Cabernets. Langer then returned to California — he earned his degree at U.C. Davis — spending a decade as head viticulturist and winemaker at Napa’s Sullivan Winery, while simultaneously developing Hesperian. In 2010 Philippe left Sullivan, settling into Hesperian full-time at his current 14-acre plot on Atlas Peak. It’s true, last year’s fires set Langner back, but equally true is that his firm commitment to producing delicious wines of great purity, detail, and longevity never wavered.
